It happens often enough that one of the other orders listed above is also the best
psychological order for a certain audience under certain circumstances.

Do not use the psychological order as an excuse to throw away all order. Make sure
first that you yourself have a plan that you can explain on demand and then take
care that the reader always knows where he is and can see the connections between
the parts of your theme.

Supply the reader with all the information he needs for an easy following of the
thought.

Supply necessary information when or before the reader needs it. Do not use devic-
es like I forgot to tell you orit should have been mentioned earlier that ...

To supply missing connections, to make vague ones more definite, and to smooth out
abrupt transitions, use bridge words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs.

Some common bridge words are this, that; but, still, yet, however; then, next, first;
while, finally, meanwhile, afterward; so, therefore, consequently.

Meanwhile and similar connectives are very helpful in holding the reader on the
track when the writer is keeping two or more series of events going at once.

Do not use first when no other items follow.

Do not use finally when other items follow.

Do not use and when you mean but; that it, where there is opposition to express.

Do not use therefore, consequently, and so on, when what follows is not even in a
wide sense a conclusion from what preceded it. Say and now or something of the
sort.

Do not useso when a mere time connection or no connection at all exists between
parts.

When using this, that, he, and other pronouns as bridge words, take care that it is
always clear just what each one's antecedent is. When this is not clear, drop the
pronoun in favor of some other word or phrase whose reference is not vague.

Some common bridge phrases are thisand thatplus a noun, on the other hand, on the
contrary, after that, in the second place, in the last part, in the next part, in the
meantime, as a consequence, and as a result..

Do not use bridge words, phrases, sentences or paragraphs were they are not needed
to make clear the connection and relationship between the parts of the theme. If
you load your writing with unnecessary transition expressions, you will slow its
pace and make it sound windy.
